Do You Need COVID-19 Insurance Cover?

One of the most discussed topics which have highly affected our lifestyle in today’s scenario is COVID-19. Willingly or unwillingly all of us are surrounded by COVID-19 risk. Although we can’t do much about it, we need to accept and start living with this reality but with some precaution that is there in our hands. We can reduce this risk by reducing going out, meeting fewer people, wearing masks and despite doing this there are still chances that it may get transmitted because no one knows who is the carrier.

There is another very important thing which is in our hands and many people do not look at it seriously which is taking COVID-19 Kavach indemnity insurance cover specifically covering COVID-19. However, you can claim your COVID-19 treatment from your medical insurance itself but what you need to figure out is- what is your sum assured (insurance cover amount- company cover+personal cover) and if it is not sufficient or you don’t have medical cover, then make sure to cover self and family with COVID Kavach.

Let’s discuss the expense of COVID-19 treatment (source: Mumbai Mirror)

The capped charges are going to give a breather to some extent to patients and their families as per day charge for an ICU bed with a ventilator and isolation facility at the facilities have been capped at Rs 9,000.

Rs 4000: Charges for routine ward + isolation
Rs 7500: Charges for ICU without ventilator + isolation
Rs 9000: Charges for ICU with ventilator + isolation

Inclusions:
– Monitoring and Investigations like CBC, Urine Routine
– HIV Spot Anti HCV, Hbs Ag, Serum Creatinine
– USG, 2D Echo, X-ray, ECG,
– Drugs Consultations
– Bed charges
– Nursing charges
-Meals
– Procedures like Ryles tube insertion, urinary tract catheterisation

The cost does not include:
1) PPE
2) Interventional Procedures like, but not limited to, Central Line insertion, Chemoport Insertion, bronchoscopic procedures, biopsies, ascitic/pleural tapping, etc, which may be charges at the rack rate as on 3Ist Dec
2019.
3) COVID testing to be done as per actual cost as per the direction
4) High-end drugs like Immunoglobulins, Meropenem, Parentral Nutrition, Tocilizumab, etc to be charged at MRP as per direction 9
5) High-end investigations like CT scan. MRI, PET scan

Looking at the above expenses, minimum per day hospitalization expense you may expect not less than Rs. 10,000 (excluding PPE and other charges) which will be approx. Rs. 1.5 lakhs for 15 days. Hence, consider covering a minimum of Rs. 3–4 lakhs each member of your family. So, check your medical policy sum assured today and take action.

As protection against the raging COVID-19 pandemic, insurance regulator, Irdai, had directed all general and health insurers, on 26 June 2020, to come up with two standard COVID-19 specific plans — COVID Kavach and COVID Rakshak — by 10 July. While the mandatory COVID Kavach is an indemnity plan which pays for hospitalization, COVID Rakshak is the optional and benefit-based plan.
